Celebrate National Happy Hour Day with a THC-Infused Twist

Author: Georgia Good

Good news, kids: it’s National Happy Hour day! Okay, maybe it’s not the most famous holiday, but we’re not going to question it. It’s a great excuse to have fun, switch off, and grab a drink. Well, at least that’s our plan!

And by the way, while we’re on the subject: turns out November 12th is also Odd Socks Day, National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day, and Fancy Rat & Mouse Day (in case you feel like dressing up your pet mouse). Who knew?

But back to happy hour. We all know it as a time when, across the world, drinks can be bought at a discount. But what's its history?

Where Did Happy Hour Come From?

We decided to do some digging.

The term is centuries old. It appears in Shakespeare’s Henry V, where the king calls out, ‘Therefore, my lords, omit no happy hour that may be given furtherance to our expedition’. No surprise we can count on Will to popularize, or invent, hundreds of terms we use today. His message: don’t let a good opportunity pass you by, whether that’s achieving a major strategic goal (in his case, taking back land from the French), or having an after-work Wynk with friends.

As a specific time of entertainment, ‘happy hour’ can be traced to US Naval slang in World War One - a time for sailors to kick back and boost morale at sea. By the end of the war, it had spread, referring to many kinds of American entertainment - including music, dancing, movies, and wrestling. During Prohibition, it became associated with alcohol—specifically, that time spent in a speakeasy before heading to a dry restaurant. By the 1950s and '60s, a post-work drink had become a staple of American life.

What Does It Mean for You?

At Wynk, we think happy hours shouldn’t just be about alcohol. Informed by our history lesson, we want to zoom out and ask: what makes these times truly happy? They’re about the joys of friendship and community, unwinding after a long day’s work, and taking a moment to brighten our days. We love the idea of a designated ‘hour’ for this—and a designated holiday to celebrate it.

Tradition with a Twist

And if ‘happy hour’ still screams ‘cocktail’ to you, we’ve got you covered. You’ll find lots of THC-infused mocktail recipes on our blog. Here are some to get you started:

With a 1:1 ratio of THC to CBD, no alcohol, and no calories, our hydrating, hemp-infused seltzers offer a buzz without a hangover—so you’ll be just as happy in the morning.

And while it’s fun to celebrate today, remember: any hour can be happy hour, and any day can be Happy Hour Day. It’s all about the definition—and at Wynk, we love redefining things. ;) Cheers!
